30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 11

DAY ELEVEN
Your Favorite TV Shows
Unlike my husband, I’ve never been OVERLY obsessive with TV shows – although I love TV. Last Saturday, we drove to Time Warner Cable and turned in our cable box to save money (oh taxes, how I loathe thee). It was hard (and I almost cried) but actually, it hasn’t been that bad (so far). We found most of the TV shows we watch online, and otherwise we’ve just been filling our time with other things. In some ways, it’s probably a good thing.
As far as favorite TV shows – FRIENDS is probably my number one for many reasons. Stacey and I started watching the show on DVD, as it was actually in its final season (we don’t like to watch things that are popular – and in fact, I stayed away from it BECAUSE of its popularity for a long time). But…. it’s a solid comedy that stayed strong for 10 years. I feel like the “art” of the sitcom is generally being lost to “reality” TV nowadays, and I think that’s too bad. I can also watch it repeatedly (and have) but still laugh as hard as the first time I saw it. I can have entire conversations with Stacey in quotes from the show (and have). I made Stacey dance with me to theme song at my wedding  (“I’ll Be There For You” by The Rembrandts). It’s just all around my favorite show!
I’ve had many other “favorite” TV shows in my time, but they tend to just follow along with my interests at the time. From “Punky Brewster” to “A Wedding Story,” the shows I like tend to mirror where I’m at in life. I do have a soft spot for shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, and Parenthood. Recently, my Dad suggested we watch the sitcom “The Middle” and that’s been super funny. We’ve also been taping Matthew Perry’s latest venture “Mr. Sunshine,” but I wouldn’t call any of them really my favorite, since I won’t watch most episodes more than once.
So… there ya have it! See you for Day 12!

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 11

DAY ELEVEN:
Your Favorite TV Shows
Ok, this is another hard one for me, because I have been into MANY TV shows over the years.  There are reasons why I used to weigh 337 pounds, and my love of tv shows is one of them, particularly animated programs.  Looking back over the past 32 years, 9 months, and 6 days, I can see four clear standouts.  And since the title says “TV Shows“, I guess I can settle on four.
The first one is “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.  To be specific, the cartoon, and to be more specific, the classic one that most people in my age group remember.  This show ran for ten seasons (1987-1996), and broke records for longest running animated program, and I think maybe for longest running TV series in general or some such.
Chances are if you’re in your mid-twenties to mid-thiries now, you have at least some knowledge of what the gist of this show is, and probably are not needing to know more.  So rather than explain WHAT it was, I’ll get into WHY I look at it so fondly.
When I was young, my thing was playing with action figures.  Especially those that had their own cartoons (i.e. 30-minute toy commercials).  I’m from a generation of boys that had A LOT of toy/cartoon fads thrown at them, and I have MANY fond memories of my childhood best friend Corey and I playing He-Man, Transformers, G.I.Joe, etc.  The thing that makes the Turtles stick out is the fact that it was the last such fad I was into when I was still at what society considers an acceptable age…and the fad lasted into what most would consider too old, but whatever.
TMNT was the last toy line and cartoon I enjoyed as a child with Corey, and due to the fact that I had gotten older, was also the cartoon I seemed to get into the most.  By this age I was able to/allowed to use the VCR (I know kids nowadays come out of the womb using electronics, but keep in mind this was the early 90s) and as such I embarked on a super geeky mission to tape every episode.  Which I eventually did.  Not something that I think is that cool nowadays, but I have fond memories of doing that.
I’m also the type of guy who will typically root for the villians, and Shredder and Krang are two of my all-time favorites.
So enough rambling on the subject of mutant turtles, and onto number two…The Simpsons!  If you’ve never heard of this show, then crawl out from under your rock.  This show started in 1989 and is still going today.  This is the show that actually took the title of “longest running” from the TMNT in 2000.
But to me, this is the show me and my Dad had.  This was our bonding experience every Thurday night, then Sunday nights, and then like 6 days a week when it hit syndication.  We started watching it around the time I was taping the Turtles, so my Dad suggested I tape some of the Simpsons episodes so we could watch them on off-nights (pre-syndication), which i did, obsessively.
The third show is more recent, but getting older now: “Spongebob Squarepants”!  Another popular animated show, this one is also still running and has also passed the 10-year mark.  Like the other shows, I have fond memories of watching this with others.  Namely three of my parents friends kids who used to come over a lot to visit: Morgan, Tiffany, and Sara.  I was probably WAY too old to be into Spongebob, but they were all just the right age, and we had a lot of fun laughing at my Spongebob DVDs.
My fourth and final favorite lasted exactly ten years (seems to be some kind of prerequesite), and is the first show Jenn and I shared together, after she got be hooked: “Friends”!  This is another show that I imagine most people have heard of, and is the one of the few non-animated shows I’ve been really into in the course of my life.  Jenn has all ten seasons on DVD, and we watch them in the morning while we have breakfast in bed (that’s right, we know how to live!) and a lot of nights when we fall asleep.  We’ve almost made it through our third go-round of all ten seasons in two years.
I hope you’ve enjoyed today’s extra long post!

30 Day Blog Challenge: Day 10

DAY TEN
What are you afraid of?
I had this reoccurring dream when I was younger, really young. I remember that I would be surrounded by all the people I love at a party of celebration of some sort (at the time, my parents, my brother, my grandparents, my uncles) and then one by one they would disappear and I would suddenly be in the dark, by myself. I would be feeling around touching walls, but no one was there. I would often end up waking up teary, and climbing into bed with my Mom (man, I miss the days when that was socially acceptable on a rough day…)
To some extent, I feel like that dream symbolizes what I am afraid of – losing people I love. Some days, when I think about the losses of my grandparents (on my mother’s side), my two uncle’s, the cold war going on with my brother, the number of times I’ve come thisclose to losing my mother… I feel like that dream has some footing in reality. Although I don’t live in a death-grip fear that I will lose everyone I love, I do believe that is my worst fear. I’m sure that is a fear for lots of people, maybe everyone – I just wish I hadn’t had so much experience with losing loved ones to make it part of my reality.

DAY TEN:
Something You’re Afraid Of

Looking like this again…
Ok, so that’s not really what I’m afraid of, although I am cautious.  I just couldn’t decide on a photo that fit this topic.  I have a lot of abnormal fears, and they generally stem from loss of mobility, mainly paralysis or amputation.
I don’t expect to be in a situation where either of these two situations is likely to occur, but I guess you never know.  It’s not like I spend every waking moment thinking about this, but I admit the idea of never being able to walk again, or use my arms, or to feel most of my body sounds pretty terrifying.
So, that’s my fear.  Have a nice day!  🙂

DAY NINE
A Favorite Picture of Your Best Friend
I am blessed to have 3 wonderful people that I consider my best friends…. so here they are (in order of appearance in my life…)
She’s been part of my life – well, obviously since conception. In that time, my Mom has never failed to protect me, to encourge me, to challenge me, to listen to me, to give me hope, to cheer me on, and to love me. She’s also one of the strongest women I know, and I’m proud to be her daughter. In this picture, it’s September 18th..the day before my wedding. I love how happy we both look, and that she is wearing the chamois shirt she’s had forever and I always picture her in 🙂

Here’s Stacey, doing what she loves (even though that’s a fake smile)…which makes it one of my favorite pictures of her. Even if it means I have to follow behind her, lugging her camera bag and sighing loudly every time she has a “lens change!”
Last, but not least…my rock. My real-life-holy-cow-knight-in-shining-armor-husband. Okay, this picture always makes me laugh. Casey can always make me laugh – and has an incredible way of finding the bright side and being positive (heck, he even told the doctors 10 minutes after finding out he had a stroke that he was “doing good”…!!!). I just love him, and count my blessings every day I wake up next to him!

DAY EIGHT:
A Place You’ve Traveled To
This is another one that’s hard to choose, because Jenn and I have spent much of our relationship traveling to new places.  All of them have been places within the northeast United States, but one of our strengths is that we can always find some place fun and interesting to go, without having to fly halfway across the country.  I guess I should mention that Jenn got me an AWESOME week-long cruise that travels between Spain, Italy, and France for my birthday this year, but there will be more on that later, after we go in June!
For this blog post, I’ve decided to write about New York, New York!  I’ve been there three times, and I have never been to any place like it!  The city is so alive, and so full of action and light and sound that it just can’t really be described without seeing it firsthand!
My first trip was a road trip back in June of 2001, way before I knew Jenn.  I went with my friend Dave and his then-wife Hillary for a one night trip to see “WWF New York”, a WWF owned and operated sports bar/restaurant/wrestling museum.  I was so into pro wrestling back then, that looking back now, it’s kind of scary.  It was a monday night, purposefully chosen since that’s when they taped/broadcasted “Raw Is War” which happened to be taking place in Madison Square Garden that night.  We got surpried by the appearance of Stone Cold Steve Austin and Kurt Angle, and I was so close to them as they rushed in that if you really look at a tape of the episode you can almost see my head sticking up behind a crowd of people.
The much cooler thing we did on that trip was go to the World Trade Center, a mere 2 and a half months before 9/11.  I’m glad I went, because I would have never seen it otherwise.  I have some photos from inside the Trade Center, but I don’t have them scanned, unfortunately.  At some point I will post some up!
Trip #2 was quite some time later, and very memorable!  As Jenn mentioned in a previous entry, we were flown out to New York by NBC in August of 2008 to appear on the “Joy Fit Club” segment of the Today Show.  It was really more Jenn, but I was very excited for her, and glad that she got them to accept me, too, because it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!  We got to meet Joy Bauer, Kathy Lee Gifford, Hoda, Natalie Morales, and briefly said hi to Al Roker in the green room.  Jenn got her hair done by one of the SNL hair stylists, and I got told that my mic would be coming but it was currently being used by Reverend Run’s wife.  Pretty wild day!
Besides all of the celebrity happenings, we got to spend 24 hours in NYC!  It was our first trip outside of Maine together, with the exception fo a day trip to Vermont to pick up a washing machine.  We had a romatic dinner outside of the Rockefeller Center, which we then journeyed to the top of.  We got to wander the city and go to various shops, and take a romantic carriage ride through central park!
My third and most recent trip to the Big Apple happened just last August.  As a surprise for our friend Stacey, Jenn, her Mom, and I sprang for a surprise trip to NYC!  We revealed her present to her in July at the Vermont (and New Hampshire..whatever) Race For The Cure, which occurs on or around her birthday every year.  I devised a game show that was rigged for her to win, and Jenn and Sandy came up with a song and dance number for us to do to “New York, New York” when she won.
This was my longest stay yet..3 days and 4 nights of fun!  We crammed a lot in, the theme being Broadway musicals.  The big one we wanted to see was “Wicked” (my first time, but the second time for my three fellow travelers), but we also saw “Rock of Ages” and “Promises, Promises”.  I HIGHLY recommend “Wicked” and “Rock of Ages”.  I believe the former is on tour, and I know the latter just went on tour, too, so try to look them up!  The romantic comedy, “Promises, Promises” was great, too, but a “Wizard of Oz” prequel and a musical set to popular 80’s music are just hard for anything else to beat!
We also managed to go to the Statue of Liberty..well we went by it on a feryy to Ellis Island, but we got a good look at it and some great photos!  Ellis Island was also good to see, and a sort of interesting look back at what immigrants went through…I passed all the example mental exams they had there!  Yay me!
One other big night we had on that trip was a surprise birthday dinner for Sandy (whose birthday occured during the trip) at Caroline’s Comedy Club.  We had a great dinner, and then moved into another room where we were lucky enough to be seated about half an inch for the stage where all the amateur (and some experienced) comedians performed their stand-up routines.  We all got picked on but Jenn, multiple times for some of us!
So that’s my New York Trilogy.  People like trilogies, right?  I hope you enjoyed this one.  See you tomorrow for “Day Nine”!

DAY EIGHT
Places You’ve Travelled (a.k.a Oh the Places You’ve Been!)
I have a thing. About photographing my feet when I go cool places. Yeah, I know. It’s weird – but it could be worse 🙂 Anyway, I was only able to find a few of this pictures that I’m able to access for this post. I know there are many more out there – likely on my other computer (I’m lazy) or in the hands of my Mom and Stacey. My dream is to someday make a big poster of all my feet pictures. Yeah,  I dream BIG. Well, here’s a few 🙂 Enjoy!

DAY SEVEN
Your Favorite Movie
I can’t do it justice. Let’s just say, it’s set in one of my favorite time periods to study. It’s a beautiful story. It has action and love combined (my favorite!) And it makes me cry. Every. Time. (Some say I am an “ice queen” and don’t cry at movies – which isn’t true. I just didn’t happen to cry at Nights In Rodanthe ::coughcoughstaceyandcaseycoughcough::). ANYWAY, due to the fact that I can’t do the movie justice here in my measly olde blog….go here and check it out. And for goodness sake, if you haven’t seen it – rent it ASAP (that means YOU, Casey Gilman).

DAY SEVEN:
Your Favorite Movie

This is a tough one…I have many favorite movies, spanning action & sci-fi geekdom, to comedies, to chick flicks…one just occured to me off the top of my head, though, one that I’ve loved since I was a child, and remains a favorite to this day and probably the most long-standing favorite on my favorites list.  And that movie is…

GHOSTBUSTERS!  Besides being the only 27-year-old movie on my list (most of my other favorites are from the past 10 to 20 years, except “Star Wars” which I didn’t see until the 90s so it doesn’t count as being older), I noticed just a second ago, as I was typing the different movie genres that I like, that “Ghostbusters” fits into ALL of them…except maybe chick flick…although who didn’t get a little teary at the end when, upon beating the giant Marshmellow Man, Dr. Venkman (Bill Murray) found his girl (Sigourney Weaver) turned into a dog and frozen as a lifeless dog statue forever..well until 5 seconds later when she broke out all human and alive…but it was a tearjerker for a second there!

This movie had a great cast of 80’s actors and actresses, and a memorable theme song!  It is also probably one of the most quotable movies out there, from “GET HER!” to “Ray, if someone asks you if you’re a god, you say ‘YES’!”  Anyway, I could go on, but chances are you’ve seen it, and if you haven’t go out and rent it, because I won’t do it justice talking about it on this blog post!

So there you have it!  My on-the-spot choice for favorite movie!  It surprised me a little, but I can see why I chose it!  Honorable mention goes to: “Star Wars” Episodes III-VI, “Batman”, “Batman Begins”, “The Dark Knight”, “Spider-Man”, “Spider-Man 2”, “Spider-Man 3”, The “Back To The Future” Trilogy, “South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut”, The “Indiana Jones” quadrilogy, the “Hellboy” movies, “Transformers” movies (past and present), “Masters of the Universe”, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” 1-3, and probably some others I’m not thinking of.  Have a nice day! 🙂
