A New Year Plunge

Some people jump into the ocean on New Year’s Day.

Some people run through the snow barefoot.

Us? We took a different kind of plunge this year.

This plunge? It’s a game changer.

I immediately teared up. You and Casey will be such amazing parents; I am incredibly excited and happy for you both to begin this journey. What a wonderful “plunge” you are jumping into. I wish you the absolute best of luck! <3

From a post-adoptive parent to a pre-adoptive parent: Please please please take lots of classes about attachment and find a good, trained attachment therapist that is trained in the Dan Hughes model of therapy. After you foster or adopt, keep on taking classes about attachment and keep doing therapy. if the therapist doesn’t feel right or wants to meet with your child alone, find a new therapist – the good ones are out there – and the good ones will show a commitment to working with your family and supporting you as parents, and will treat you as a partner in the therapeutic process. Find people who support you and who will remain non-judgmental. Obviously from someone who has been there – both as a social worker and as a mother. You will make WONDERFUL parents – it takes special kinds of people to make this happen right, and you have it in you to do it.
    With love, support and respect,
    Tana

  5. So exciting! The best of luck to you!

  6. Best of luck! My friend Jenna at Blogher tweeted a link to your other story and I wandered over. We adopted from foster care in NC almost 10 years ago. Been a wonderful journey. We went through Children’s Home Society but I don’t think they have any offices down on the coast. I’m sure you know a great deal from you work but if I can help, feel free to drop me a line. I don’t blog about adoption anymore because it’s more our daughter’s story than mine. She’s an amazingly awesome almost 15 year old and we are so happy that we pursued this path.
