Red Shoes

They made me feel powerful.

Sometimes I would click them three times, and spin around. I would chant softly “There’s no place like home,” and be transformed into a world of make believe.

Sometimes I would pretend I was a ballroom dancer gliding across my bedroom floor.

I was an eight year old girl. With my very own pair of ruby slippers.

I wore them with everything. Floral dresses that didn’t match. Hot pink stirrup leggings that didn’t match.

To me, matching didn’t matter.

What mattered was the perfect “clicking sound” they made on the pavement while I walked, announcing my arrival.

What mattered was the confidence I felt because they left glitter everywhere I went.

What mattered was the fact that I felt beautiful in them.

Oh, my daughters would love love LOVE red shoes like that! I love shiny eye shadow, even though I’m probably too old to wear it.

  3. When I was four, I was Dorothy for Halloween. My artist mom dipped white mary jane shoes in glue and then in red glitter. They held up well! Now that I’m a mother, my daughter’s favorite shoes are red glitter mary janes from Target. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!

  5. I have a grown up pair of red shoes. No glitter, but they still make me feel beautiful. Buttons on the toes, red patent leather – beautiful, powerful, and fun shoes.
