The Open Road

If all goes according to plan this year (and I am hoping FOR ONCE, that it will), we will be moving to North Carolina. And before we settle in to the new life down south (it kills me to think that if we ever get to have kids, they will have southern accents, how adorable!) — we are going to take a road trip.

THE GRANDDADDY OF ROADTRIPS.

Casey, my Mom, and I (and 4 dogs) are renting (or potentially, hopefully buying) a RV, and busting out all over the United States. For roughly 2 months we will be traveling.

Here’s where YOU come in. We are in the process of compiling a list of MUST SEE places across the United States, because chances are, we will never get to do this again, so we’ve got to do it up right.

Where do you think we should visit?

What amazing place is there in the state/town YOU live in, that we can’t miss?

And…. can we set up our RV in your backyard?

(Just kidding)….(sort of).

Okay, I can’t wait to hear your suggestions…..GO!!!

“So I drive, watching white lines pass me by
With my plastic dashboard Jesus, waiting there to greet us.
Hey hey! I’ve finally found my way, say goodbye to yesterday
Hit the gas, there ain’t no brakes on this lost highway
Yeah, I’m busting loose, I’m letting go, out on this open road
It’s Independence Day on this lost highway.”

You know I'm going to say Texas. "It's like a whole nother country" is the travel motto here. Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World. The Hill Country is beautiful in the spring. The mesas in west Texas are beautiful. The forests in east Texas are beautiful. The peaches in the Fredricksburg area are scrumptious. Texans are gracious hosts. I lived in Charlotte, NC for a while (where I got my NASCAR habit) and it's nice, but they don't know BBQ like we do. Go tubing on the Guadalupe river, in New Braunfels, and visit the #1 water park in America, Schlitterbahn. You'll be moving here within a short time!

  2. I'm a Texan, but I have to say– TEXAS!

I wish I could take a 2 months road trip! Here in Utah you can hear angels sing with the Tabernacle choir. They have concerts throughout the year. But how fun is that to take a road trip. If you were flying I'd say, go to the South Pacific. No, not Hawaii but where I'm from, The friendly island of Tonga. LOL.

How could you drive through Florida without stopping at Disney and say hello to Cinderella and the Epcot Center. It is a dreamworld to see.

I wanna go on route 66 and stop at one of the diners plus I want to go the Wizard of Oz museum in Kansas.

    Love ya
    MOM

  6. Go to Yellowstone for me. Take a picture by one of those humongous trees! I'm so excited for you and can't wait until you really get here.

  7. Oh and Skeeter looks sooooooooo relaxed!

  8. That picture of Skeeter is AWESOME!!! Okay, back to the task at hand. We live close to DC…so, there are about a hundred different monuments that always make me swell with patriotic pride that if you have time to check out, I would. Also, Great Falls Park, in Northern VA. You can go for a beautiful walk in the woods and wait for it…DOGS ARE ALLOWED!!
    Sounds amazing to me!!

  9. Sleeping Bear Dunes or a sunset anywhere on Lake Michigan.. ;)

  10. If you are into all the Civil War history stuff (museums & battlefields) then my area of Virginia, Richmond and parts south is the place to go. BTW it's on the way to NC if that was one of your destinations. And since I'm a southerner now (very hospitable) I'd be remiss if I didn't say, you're more than welcome to hook up the RV in my yard! Seriously!

Another vote for Texas!!! Come to Austin and visit ME!!! :)

Do you like roller coasters? Go to Sandusky, Ohio and visit Cedar Point. TOTALLY worth it! :) And then, hit up Amish Country, Ohio and the Columbus Zoo — voted the best zoo in America recently! :)

  12. Sarah says:

K10 is right, cedar point is amazing. The rock n roll hall of fame is pretty cool too! There's a place in Ohio, that's driving distance from my parents called Wagon Trails. It's a safari park with lots of grazing animals that you feed from a trucked on a drive. We saw elk, deer, long horn cattle, camels, water buffalo, zebras, and ostriches. Definitely hoping to go back this summer with the girls.

Mall of America. Deadwood, thoroughbred breeding farms in Kentucky, Colorado mountains.

You could drive to Denali in Alaska! That would be an epic road trip. See northern lights.

    Gravity hill in central pa.

    Las Vegas!

    Florida keys! Swim with dolphins!!!

  13. Lake Tahoe to San Francisco and then follow the coast north to Washington, wind through the Wenatchee valley and send me pictures. I'm so going to live in the Wentachee valley … someday.

Free parking at my house, but I'm in Cape Coral Florida. About 45 minutes to Sanibel, Ft Myers Beach, and 3 hrs to Disneyworld. Did I mention hubby has a fishing boat and I schedule his play dates?

  14. Mrs. H says:

After all that travelling you're gonna have to relax on the beach so head on down to the Keys (yes Florida Keys). If you're in Florida visit the Dhali museum/gallery, I've never been but I've heard its really nice. Oh of course there is Disney and Busch Gardens, NASA Space Center and Universal Studios and all that other stuff but you've probably already done that.
If I were you I'd definitely want to visit Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone, Red Rock and the Grand Canyon. Sip some wine in Napa and head on out to San Fran.
Enjoy the road trip it sounds like it going to be fun!

  15. L-Diggitty says:

Dude! Graceland! Or DollyWood! And I only say that because I'm going to Memphis this summer and both of those super-tacky places are on my agenda :)

  16. "Abby" says:

Corn Palace. Mitchell, SD. Okay, maybe I'm joking, but I've been there!

If you make it to Colorado though, I'd suggest Aspen or a similar place where there's hardly any oxygen.

  17. I agree with Pinkflipflops! I love Sleeping Bear Dunes and Lake Michigan. I also love Lake Huron too- it's a little more woodsy we stay in a cottage in Harrisburg every summer. If anything your MUST visit one of the great lakes!

  18. Barbara says:

I second Graceland! I've never been but have always wanted to go!

  19. Remy says:

New Jersey! Gotta see dah joisey shore! (oh god I can't believe I just said that, I'm going to go shoot myself in the foot now.)

ALSO, PORK ROLL! (not that taylor ham crap.)

  20. I am soooo jealous! I've traveled quite a lot in the US. After my year as an Au-Pair, my best friend and I did a 3-week AmTrak roundtrip. It was so awesome. But a 2-month road trip is an absolute dream.
So here's some of my personal must-sees:
    - Graceland, absolutely, definitely, no way 'round. And while you're in Memphis: Beale Street. And the Martin Luther King Jr Museum (don't recall the exact name)
    - The Grand Canyon
    - The French Quarter in New Orleans
    - Cape Cod, especially Provincetown
    - a picnic in Central Park in NYC
    - Coney Island
    - Atlantic City
    - Highway 101 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, including the 17-Mile-Drive
    - Solvang, CA (off the 101)
    - Yellowstone National Park
    - watching the sunset sitting on a pier in the Floriday Keys, Margarita in hand

Now I soooooo want to take a couple of months off work and travel to the U.S….. weeks in NYC followed by weeks on the road…. sigh…

    You'll have so much fun!

good to see this post—living in the south is not so bad :) but i admit its more laid back, i came from a big city too in the Philippines–when i came here i had a bit of a culture shock but im sure you would really love the hospitality of the southern and their accent though..hope you enjoy the trip God bless

  22. Taylor says:

I second everything JT said about Texas. Also, Mt. Rushmore; Mitchell Corn Palace; Santa Fe, New Mexico; Disneyland or Disney World; San Diego Zoo; Coronado Island (outside of San Diego); Las Vegas are the rest of my votes. :)

  23. Just Jane says:

You have to come to Denver if only to see the Rocky Mountains. There is so much to do and see here but what I suggest depends on what you like.

If you go to Wyoming, you need to see the Tetons and Yellowstone including Old Faithful.
